August 16-19 - Trail Relocation, Scuppernong Springs Area, Kettle Moraine SF, Waukesha County - IAT Thank You! Thank you to all the dedicated souls that made the Scuppernong Ice Age Trail project a huge success. The legacy that you have helped create will live on for generations. Between two major rain events (on Wed morning and Sat afternoon) 400 feet of puncheon/boardwalk were constructed as well as a 25 foot bridge. Four-step tread constructed was completed on nearly 400 feet and a new 1.2 mile reroute of the Ice Age Trail has been completed. The reroute now avoids two dangerous crossings of busy State Highway 67 while surrounding the hiker with excellent sites and sounds of the Scuppernong Prairie. Volunteers were safe, had fun and completed their goals. We had one of our youngest ever at a Mobile Skills Crew project. 2 ½ year old Ben hauled duff buckets despite a bee sting…what a trooper! In total, over 170 volunteers donated nearly 2500 hours of time to this great cause – the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. Without the drive, dedication and devotion of these volunteers, the Ice Age Trail would be merely a line on a map. I would like to extend special appreciation to the following: Waukesha/Milwaukee Chapter for welcoming the MSC and taking on the daunting task of feeding hundreds of hungry workers; of course our dedicated MSC’ers who make most of the projects and happily assign and lead crews, design and layout the Trail; the DNR staff at the Southern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest and water regulations who helped expedite the entire process. Major funding for this project was provided by grants from WE Energies and REI, in addition to the National Park Service Challenge Cost Share program and funds from the Waukesha/Milwaukee Chapter of IAPTF. Donors for this project include: East Shore Mustard, Delafield Brewhaus, Nikwax, Bruegger Brother’s Bagels, Fox Brothers’ Piggly Wiggly, Pick-n-Save at Cold Spring & 76th St, Walmart of Delafield, Jim Stephans, and Brownberry Outlet of Oconomowoc. Keep your eyes and ears open, for there are howls coming from the northwoods… Kevin Thusius Project Team Leader Land Stewardship Coordinator Ice Age Park and Trail Foundation P.O.
