July  13-16 - New Trail, Holy Hill Segment, Washington County - IAT Thank You!

One week ago today (7/13/6), it was 96 degrees with high humidity…and yet we plodded on.  A few shady areas were the only respite for the weary trail worker…but we prevailed.  A huge applause and a cold beverage go out to all of you for your efforts in last week’s Mobile Skills Crew project at Holy Hill.  Over 140 volunteers turned out and compiled over 2500 volunteer hours in an effort to build 1.1 miles of new, high-quality Ice Age Trail.  We eliminated over a mile of road walking along  busy highways.  We chipped away earth, raked and scraped, hauled it away and when the dust settled, a beautifully designed Trail lie gently on the landscape.  Please find time to go and enjoy it.

In order to have such a successful project, it takes good people and organizations at many levels.  The Project Team is the group in charge of most of the project-related aspects, such as trail layout, safety, food prep and service, organization and tool management.  Brad Crary, Bob Broman, Tim Malzhan, Lisa Delaney, Barbara Woodhouse, Rod Bartlow, Theresa Werner, Kris Jensen, Craig Sanford…NICE JOB!

Our campsite was provided by Quad Graphics free of charge– thank you to Scott Jaeger and Kris Woltmann.  The Carmelite’s provided us with a safe parking area, and continue to host a great section of the Trail – thank you to Doug Unser for his assistance.  This project could not have happened without funding assistance from the National Park Service’s Challenge Cost Share program and generous donations from local businesses: Mineshaft Restaurant, Glacier Ice, Amici’s, Village Beverage Center, Richfield Liquor, Nutman Company, East Shore Specialty Food, Panera Bread, Brownberry, Seven-up Bottling Company, Pick n’ Save and Piggly Wiggly.  And let’s not forget that without efforts of the WDNR, and the Ozaukee Washington Land Trust, we would have never attained this new 120-acre State Ice Age Trail property.

Everyone who suffered through the heat last weekend, or prepared meals, or brought cold water please give yourself a big pat on the back, relax, and enjoy the hike.

Thank you,
Kevin Thusius

Team Leader
